Attima takes Honeymoon BC 'Cap

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Attima scored her first stakes win in Sunday's $137,150 at Hollywood Park in such convincing style that trainer Julio Canani was baffled on what races to aim for this summer.

The 4-5 favorite, Attima led throughout and was never really threatened, winning by 1 1-4 lengths over Foxysox. Ridden by Victor Espinoza, who gave her only the slightest urging with the whip in the stretch, Attima ran 1 1-8 miles on turf in 1:47.36. Proxenia finished third in the field of seven 3-year-old fillies.

Canani did not expect Attima to set the pace, but she had an advantage of 1 1-2 lengths over Foxysox after a quarter-mile. Attima led by as many as two lengths, setting early fractions of 23.61 and 47.95 seconds. Foxysox drew within a half-length in the stretch but could not get closer.

Attima has won 3 of 7 starts and $162,626. An import from France, Attima has won two starts in this country since being acquired over the winter by Anthony Fanticola and Joseph Scardino.

Canani said he would consider the $750,000 American Oaks on July 2 or could wait for the San Clemente Handicap at Del Mar on July 29.

"I don't know what I want to do," Canani said. "With this (warm) weather, horses don't eat. I may wait for the Sam Clemente."
