Attard has the two to beat

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Sid Attard will be holding a pair of aces in Saturday's $200,000 Play the King Stakes at Woodbine when he runs Just Rushing and Jungle Wave in the seven-furlong turf sprint. The Grade 2 event is a prep for the $1 million Woodbine Mile on Sept. 20.

Just Rushing captured last year's Play the King with a Beyer Speed Figure of 102 before ending up third in the Woodbine Mile. He won his second start of this meet in a $100,000 optional claimer and is coming off a victory over Sterwins in the seven-furlong Ontario Jockey Club Stakes.

Just Rushing breezed three furlongs in 36 on Tuesday.

Jungle Wave was claimed by Just Rushing's owner, Tucci Stable, for a hefty $62,500 in May, and has proven to be well worth the money. Each of his three starts for his current connections came over 6 1/2 furlongs, which includes a decisive score in the allowance prep for the Play the King.

Attard said Jungle Wave didn't have the smoothest of trips when second to reigning Canadian Horse of the Year Fatal Bullet July 19 in the Bold Venture Stakes on the Polytrack.

"He ran a good race in that stake," said Attard. "I'm not saying he could have beaten [Fatal Bullet], but he had an excuse. He had the 1 hole, and the winner dropped in, but he never bothered us. My horse shied a bit and took back to fourth, and then came running."

Jimmy Simms took the Woodchopper Stakes in December at Fair Grounds. He is exiting a front-running tally over Saturday rival Fifteen Love in an optional claimer in his first try for trainer Roger Attfield.

"He's definitely a nice horse, and he's been training well," said Attfield. "The owners would like to go to the Mile, and this would be a stepping-stone in that direction."

Field Commission was a fast-closing second the only time he competed on turf, which came in the Grade 3 Highlander Stakes in June. He returned to finish fourth in the Bold Venture.

Cross Every Bridge is unbeaten in two starts for trainer Mark Frostad. He had been idle for over nine months when he led throughout a seven-furlong optional claimer July 31.

Rounding out the field are American shippers Rebellion and Wise River.
