Atlantic Jewel stays undefeated in Australia's One Thousand Guineas

Atlantic Jewel, now an undefeated 4 for 4, emerged as Australian racing's newest superstar when easily making the step up to Group 1 company in Caulfield's Schweppes One Thousand Guineas.

Settling ninth in the field of 11 3-year-old fillies, the imposing Fastnet Rock filly cruised into contention on the left-handed turn and swept past second favorite Mosheen in the straight with devastating ease. Without being extended, she eased clear by three lengths at the finish with her rider Michael Rodd tilting his head to the right to flash a large grin for the cameras.

Afterward, her emotional trainer, Mark Kavanagh -- who also trains December Draw, fancied at even money for Saturday's Caulfield Cup -- was rendered nearly speechless. He presented no plans for where she would race next, and Rodd referred to her as a Caulfield Cup horse in the making.

Collecting just over $300,000 in the process, the Coolmore-owned Atlantic Jewel was also stretching out to the Guineas' one-mile distance for the first time on ground listed as good. She returned 0.70-1 to her backers both in Australia and abroad.
