Atlantic Destiny comes on late

Dropping back to last in a five-furlong race isn't usually a good idea. Trailing by 6 1/2 lengths with a quarter-mile left in a sprint isn't normally the path to victory, either.

But jockey Ramon Dominguez obviously knew what he was doing biding his time with Atlantic Destiny. Dead last in a field of nine fillies and mares after three-sixteenths of a mile and apparently going nowhere with two furlongs to go, Atlantic Destiny stormed past a pair of longshots to win Tuesday's $69,100 Local Thriller Stakes at Delaware Park.

Atlantic Destiny ($4.20) beat another closer, 23-1 shot Lariat, by three-quarters of a length. Her time for five furlongs on a firm turf course was 56.74 seconds. Maypole Dance, who led by 1 1/2 lengths with a furlong remaining, faded to third at 19-1.

Trained by James Murphy, Atlantic Destiny has now won seven of 24 starts on grass.
