Atlantic City mini-meet starts

Atlantic City Race Course will hold the first of four all-turf live racing cards on Wednesday. First post is 3 p.m. for the seven-race card.

The meeting, which is one of the more unusual on the U.S. racing calendar, consists entirely of four live racing days: Wednesday and Thursday this week and next. Betting on the races will be available only at the racetrack, which has not held a significant live meet for 10 years but is open year-round as a simulcast facility.

Last year, Atlantic City held four live racing cards, split evenly between flat and steeplechase races. This year, only flat races will be held, according to the track's racing secretary, Sal Sinatra, who is also the racing secretary for Philadelphia Park. Philadelphia's parent, Greenwood Racing, owns Atlantic City and maintains it so that simulcasting can be offered.

An overnight stakes, the $50,000 Tony Gatto Dream Big Stakes, will be held closing day. The race is for 3-year-olds and up going five-eighths on the turf.
