Assiniboia: Kommando Kate looks too good

Email

Kommando Kate looms as a prohibitive choice when Assiniboia Downs kicks off its 2011 stakes schedule on Friday with the $25,000 Hazel Wright for Manitoba-bred 3-year-old fillies at six furlongs.

A total of 28 stakes worth an aggregate $970,000 will be offered at the meeting, with the highlight being the Manitoba Lotteries Derby, which recently had its purse reinstated to $75,000 after Assiniboia Downs restructured an agreement with the provincial government on its share of revenue from on-site video lottery terminals.

Not only is Kommando Kate the only winner in the Hazel Wright’s field of six but she has won three of her five starts, including the restricted North Dakota Futurity over six furlongs of slop at Assiniboia last year. Owned by Al Daley and trained by Chad Torevell, Komando Kate placed in two other stakes in Winnipeg as a 2-year-old and captured an open first-level optional claimer over five furlongs in her 2011 bow.

Mark Anderson retains the mount on Kommando Kate, whose opponents include two first-time starters.

Prairie Eclipse, who finished second in her two starts last year, joined Torevell’s barn prior to this season and has ended third in her two appearances at this meeting. Rohan Singh retains the mount on Prairie Eclipse, who should finish closest of those chasing her uncoupled stablemate.

The $25,000 Frank Arnason, which is the 3-year-old the colts and geldings equivalent to the Hazel Wright, is on tap for Saturday at the same six-furlong distance.

The Frank Aranason also attracted just six horses and the only winner is Thereisnofiteclub, who won the CTHS Sales and the Buffalo over the local oval last year.

Janine Stianson retains the mount aboard Thereisnofiteclub, who is conditioned by Blair Miller and tuned up for this engagement with a sixth-place finish in an open first-level $15,000 optional claimer on May 11.
