Assiniboia handle slips a fraction


Assiniboia Downs wound up its 2010 meeting here Sunday with a total all-sources handle of $8.9 million., down a scant .04 percent from last year’s total.

Daily average handle, which had soared last year with the addition of Wednesday-night racing, was $141,270. Ontrack wagering was up by 6 percent.

The figures were based on 63 days of racing and did not include two partial cards of one race and four races.

On the racetrack, Vicky Baze became the first female to top the jockey standings, riding 71 winners in a tight race. Larren Delorme finished with 68 winners and Janine Stianson with 67.

Tom Gardipy Jr. was the top trainer with 49 wins. Carl Anderson was next with 36 wins, and Ardell Sayler third with 31.

The partnership of Off 2 Win Stable and Ardell Sayler were the leading owners in races won with 15, followed by Jack McCartney with 14 wins and Jerry Gourneau with 12.

In the Other, a 4-year-old filly owned by Sierra Stable and trained by Gardipy,, won the first race on closing day to bring his meet-leading total to six victories.

Cherokee’s Goal, a 3-year-old colt owned by Hy Road Stable and trained by Clayton Gray, was the top money winner with $92,850.
