Assiniboia Downs: Lil Missknowitall seeks fourth straight win in La Verendrye Stakes

Email

Lil Missknowitall, a romping, odds-on winner of the May 18 allowance prep for the La Verendrye Stakes, will look to double up in the main event at Assiniboia Downs on Saturday evening.

The $30,000 La Verendrye, a six-furlong race for fillies and mares, attracted a field of nine and will go as the seventh of eight races.

Lil Missknowitall, claimed for $8,000 from a winning effort at Oaklawn Park this April, doubled up in a stakes at Fonner Park and recorded her third straight win when making her Assiniboia Downs debut May 18.

Jim Meyaard, who is 4 for 5 at the meeting, trains Lil Missknowitall, and Chris Husbands will be back in the irons as the 6-year-old begins from post 7.

Golden Stripe disappointed when finishing fourth as the second choice in the 5 1/2-furlong prep, but should benefit from the conditioning.

Now 7, Golden Stripe will be making her fourth appearance in the La Verendrye, having won the 2011 renewal and finished second in 2010 and 2012. Trevor Simpson retains the mount, and the pair will begin from post 4.

Golden Stripe, who is trained by Shelley Brown, has won seven stakes, all at Assiniboia Downs, and is the top earner in the La Verendrye field with $256,230.

Finally Flying took a run at Lil Missknowitall midway through the prep but could not keep pace and wound up second, beaten five lengths.

Trained by Clint Willson, Finally Flying finished third while making her second start of the season in last year’s La Verendrye.

Bred in British Columbia, the 5-year-old Finally Flying will be looking for her first stakes win under returning rider Tyrone Nelson and will start from post 6.

Honorable Lady, the defending champion in the La Verendrye, returns with a pair of off-the-board finishes at Northlands Park under her belt.

Tom Gardipy Jr. trains Honorable Lady, who drew post 5 and will be ridden by Jennifer Reid.

Rounding out the field are Jilleah, Threetimesawonder, She’s Copacetic, Grace O’Malley, and Sweet Tizzy Lizzy.
