Big Blue Caboose, one of three 3-year-olds in a field of 12, took charge early and was never seriously threatened en route to a two-length victory in Saturday evening’s $50,000 Gold Cup at Assiniboia Downs.

Jocelyne Kenny rode Big Blue Caboose, who is trained by Jerry Gourneau and had burst into prominence when finishing second in the Manitoba Derby over the same 1 1/8-mile distance.

Alisal, who had been racing at Woodbine, closed to finish second, 1 1/2 lengths in front of Southern Alliance.

Big Blue Caboose returned $10.30 as the second choice with the favored Doc’s Friend never mounting a challenge and winding up 11th.

Earlier on Saturday’s card Balooga Bull ($2.50) registered his fourth impressive victory in as many outings with a 7 3/4-length romp in the $50,000 Winnipeg Futurity,

Mark Anderson rode Balooga Bull, who is trained by Ardell Sayler, in the six-furlong race for 2-year-olds.

Gospel Gal, one of three fillies in the eight-horse field, finished second, one length ahead of third-place Samurai Slam.
