Assiniboia Downs: Average daily handle rises 10 percent

Assiniboia Downs wound up its 60-day meeting last Sunday with total all-sources handle of $9,065,832 on its live product, up from $8,896,330 in 2010.

The figures translate to an average live daily handle of $151,097, a 10.4 percent increase from the corresponding $136,867 figure for last year’s 65-day meeting.

The average ontrack daily handle was down slightly, to $68,242 from last year’s $69,239.

Average field size at the meet decreased from 7.93 to 7.5 horses per race.

On the racetrack, David Lopez earned his first local title by riding 72 winners. Rohan Singh was next with 67 victories and Tyrone Nelson third with 40.

Ardell Sayler topped the trainer standings with 50 wins, 11 more than runner-up Chad Torevell. Jerry Gourneau and Tom Gardipy Jr. dead-heated for third with 38 victories apiece.

Sayler and Off 2 Win were the leading owners with 27 wins and earnings of $204,414.

Angelic Fiddler and Ovid Fasti were the only horses to win as many as five races at the meeting.
