Assiniboia: Arstartops closing-day buffalo Stakes

Arstar, winner of the CTHS Sales Stakes in her last start at Assiniboia Downs on Aug. 24, will be looking to close out her first campaign on a winning note when she faces nine rivals there in Sunday’s Buffalo Stakes.

The $50,000 Buffalo, a one-mile race for Manitoba-bred 2-year-olds, will go as the ninth of 10 races on the final card of the 60-day meeting, which will begin at 1:15 p.m.

The final three days of the meeting also will be jazzed up by a three-way battle for leading rider honors. Heading into Friday’s card both Paul Nolan and Jennifer Reid had ridden 71 winners while Rohan Singh was hot on their heels with 70.

Arstar, one of two fillies in the 10-horse Buffalo field, defeated males in the CTHS Sales, a six-furlong race in which she set the pace but then had to battle back to score by a length.

Reid, who had guided Arstar to her five-furlong maiden victory in her start prior to the CTHS Sales, will break the filly from the outside post here for trainer Aaron Sayler.

Divine Wisdom and Wage War, the two-three finishers from the CTHS Sales, also are back for the Buffalo.

Ardell Sayler trains Divine Wisdom, who finished well clear of Wage War that day and again will have Nolan in the irons. Divine Wisdom, who is one of six maidens in the Buffalo, will begin from post 5.

Wage War, trained by Chad Torevell and ridden by Chris Husbands, had won his debut at five furlongs in his only previous start and drew post 4.

Theministeraffair and Just Add Salt, both of whom graduated with $9,375 claiming tags in their latest appearances, are the other winners in the Buffalo lineup.

Robert Reeves retains the mount on Theministeraffair for conditioner Blair Miller, while Chavion Chow takes over aboard Just Add Salt for Torevell.

A Girl’s Gotta Do It, the other filly in the Buffalo field, is coming off a fifth-place finish, beaten almost 14 lengths by Arstar, in the CTHS Sales. Trevor Simpson again gets the call from conditioner Clayton Gray.
