Assiniboia Downs has reported an all-sources daily average handle of $138,962 on its live product, a decrease of 8.7 percent from last year’s $151,097, for the 59-day meeting that ended last Sunday.
Total all-sources handle was $8,198,785, down by 7.8 percent from last year’s $8,896,330.
The average field size was 6.9, down from 7.5 last year.
◗ The jockeys’ race came right down to the wire this year with Paul Nolan emerging victorious by a 76-75 count over Jennifer Reid. Rohan Singh was three wins back in third.
Shelley Brown, with 48 winners, was the leading trainer. Ardell Sayler finished second with 40 wins and Chad Torevell was third with 37.
K-5 Stable led all owners with 18 wins and earnings of $241,775. Off 2 Win and Ardell Sayler finished second in races won with 16 and purses with $151,866.
Dance to Win won the most races of any horse at the meeting with a 6-for-9 mark.
But, the undisputed equine star of the 2012 Assiniboia Downs meeting was Balooga Bull, who banked $120,221 with his five wins including romps in the Manitoba Derby and Gold Cup.
ASD needs to takeover Turf Paradise's time slot on Monday and Tuesday. TuP handle on those days is $800,00 to a million. The horse quality is a little better, purses are about the same, and the live broadcast is only slightly better. ASD could easily fill that time slot and increase it's handle. Improve the live feed a little bit and ASD is good to go. Darren is a good announcer and I personally enjoy Kurt's backstretch insights that are far more in depth than most on-camera personalities.

ASD needs more horses which in turn means more wagering.

DRINK OR SINK went too fast on the lead last time before fading on the turf at Tampa, and should be less aggressive here with blinkers off. Olguin was aboard for his good fall races on the Poly, and should have him closing at a square price in his second start of the year. GOOD BETTER BEST finished up the track behind two next-out winners when he tried the dirt for the first time March 30 at Gulfstream. He hasn't faced this easy a field in a while, and is no stranger to filling out the exactor.
