Asmussen sets record for wins

Trainer Steve Asmussen set a single-season record for wins on Sunday when Prophesy won the first race at Remington Park, giving Asmussen his 556th victory in North America this year.

Asmussen set the previous mark of 555 wins four years ago. That smashed the previous record of 496 wins set by Jack Van Berg in 1976.

Prophesy, the 6-5 favorite, rallied late and just got up in the final strides to win the 7 1/2-furlong turf race for $25,000 claiming fillies and mares. Luis Quinonez was the winning jockey.

Asmussen tied the mark on Saturday when Union Strike won the final race at Fair Grounds, also with Quinonez aboard.

Asmussen’s win total does not include the two victories earned by Curlin earlier this year in Dubai.

Befitting the scope of Asmussen’s stable, he had 11 horses entered on Sunday at five different tracks -- Aqueduct, Churchill Downs, Fair Grounds, Hawthorne, and Remington.
