Asmussen horses to stay at Lone Star

Lone Star's leading trainer, Steve Asmussen, is one of several trainers planning to leave a stable of horses at Lone Star after the meet closes Sunday. The track will remain open for training because of a special fall meet in October to complement Lone Star's hosting of the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships.

About 400 horses are expected to stable on the grounds between meets, said Dale Coleman, stall superintendent at Lone Star.

Asmussen said that although some of his Lone Star-based horses will be moved to Louisiana Downs and Retama Park following the current meet, some will also remain at Lone Star.

A stall rent will be charged during the offseason, but horsemen will be reimbursed one month's rent for each horse who starts during the fall meet. Clockers and a starting gate crew will be at Lone Star during the downtime. Coleman said the track will be closed for training on Sundays.

Allowance features stakes winners

A solid group of sprinters will meet in the featured seventh race Friday at Lone Star, a six-furlong money allowance that drew stakes winners Front Nine, Term Sheet, Won C C, and Runaway Choice.

But despite the credentials of those starters, the horse to beat appears to be Firststatedeposit, who will be shooting for his fourth straight win this meet at Lone Star.

Firststatedeposit started his streak with a win in a $40,000 claimer, then advanced to the optional claiming ranks. Guy Smith has the mount on Firststatedeposit for trainer Cole Norman.
