Around the Cape sets course record in Jaipur

Around the Cape, a hard-luck loser in two consecutive stakes, got a clean trip Sunday and won the Grade 3, $111,500 Jaipur Handicap in course-record time.

Sitting three to four wide but in the clear for the entire trip, Around the Cape outkicked Bold Decision and Summer Service down the lane to win the Jaipur by three-quarters of a length. His time of 1:07.31 for six furlongs is a Belmont inner turf course record. He eclipsed the previous mark of 1:07.89, set by Not Phone on May 4. Not Phone finished fourth as the favorite in Sunday's Jaipur, which had previously been run at seven furlongs since 1986.

Around the Cape, trained by Bill Mott, had finished third in the Turf Dash at Tampa and second in the Grade 3 Shakertown with difficult trips. Sunday, under Cornelio Velasquez, Around the Cape was outside of Bold Decision and Primary Suspect, who were heads apart through a half-mile in 44.21 seconds.

Around the Cape struck the front inside the sixteenth pole and edged clear late. Bold Decision held second by a neck over Summer Service, though the two exchanged bumps in deep stretch. Kent Desormeaux, who rode Summer Service, claimed foul against the top two finishers, but the stewards dismissed it.

Mott said he was unsure where Around the Cape would run next, but seemed intrigued by the Group 1 Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot on June 24.
