Arlington Park: Papaw Bodie injured, out of Arlington Million

Email

Papaw Bodie, who emerged from obscurity to become one of the better North American turf-route runners the first half of this year, will miss the Million and most likely the rest of 2012 after suffering an undisclosed injury during a quick five-furlong workout this past Saturday at the Trackside training center in Louisville.

“He does have an injury and needs some time off,” trainer Mike Maker said, adding that he expected “it would be next year” before Papaw Bodie could race again.

Papaw Bodie was claimed for $50,000 last fall at Keeneland and quickly was moved up in class by Maker. He won the Grade 3 Connally at Sam Houston in January, finished a close second in the Grade 2 Mervin Muniz Handicap at Fair Grounds on April 1, and was second by a nose to Desert Blanc in the Grade 1 Manhattan Handicap on June 9 at Belmont in his most recent start.
