BEST BET: EL MALICIA (8th race)

FIRST RACE

1. JAMIE'S COLLEGE 2. FIGHT FOR M'LADY 3. HARPER VALLEY

JAMIE'S COLLEGE drops down to lowest class level of career, $18k; last out, on Aug. 24, was decent fifth for $25k; colt worked back four times; might stalk contested pace under leading jock. FIGHT FOR M'LADY ground out $20k claiming win last out at Saratoga; that win might make him favored here, but cuts back from slow-paced nine-furlong race to a one-turn mile with much quicker fractions likely; must adapt to that. HARPER VALLEY lone win this year came in mud; threat if clearing Missy's Whirl, who looks like the only other speed.

SECOND RACE

1. GETAWAY HOLME 2. BALLADO STAR 3. NITTY

GETAWAY HOLME started twice in career, both at the $25k maiden claiming level; bled in debut, and came back from layoff on "good" track in second start; dangerous on the drop. BALLADO STAR hit board in last five, all at this class level, without managing to win; distinct underlay. NITTY nearly broke through with win last time when making only third start at $10k level; hasn't raced in more than six weeks since, however.

THIRD RACE

1. CREEK CODE 2. MIDTERM 3. FORT OUT EAST

Don Von Hemel barn has quietly had a good meet here; they risk CREEK CODE for claiming tag for first time since colt won going away vs. $50k maidens at LS this spring; had nice prep in RP turf allowance sprint last out; closer should get pace to chase this spot. MIDTERM may wind up part of an early duel; must either rate a bit or prove fastest among several speed types; like top pick, he comes out of allowance company and won maiden for $50k at Lone Star. FORT OUT EAST in good form right now, but faces tough trip breaking from post one inside all the other speed.

FOURTH RACE

1. AYR THREE MILES 2. I'M TRYON 3. AMERICAN LATEENO

AYR THREE MILES comes out of decent tries vs. open 3yo claimers, and drop down to bottom-level N2L class might suit gelding; gelding has a touch of speed, which could serve him very well in what appears to be a paceless field. I'M TRYON surely needed last out coming back from a five-month layoff; return came for $16k N2L, where he beat two, and drop should help; worked since last. AMERICAN LATEENO had no excuse in either of last two when beaten as the favorite.

FIFTH RACE

1. FLASHY BREW 2. HORSETHIEF CREEK 3. CALL GRANNY

FLASHY BREW finally draws outside after breaking from the rail in her last three starts; has broken poorly in last two, forcing bad trips; can better afford a slow start here since there's no one to her outside; and with any sort of break, she should be up close in a race lacking pace; goes for lowest claiming level. HORSETHIEF CREEK up in class from $10l, but her form is good, she's run well at this trip, and others here have many question marks. CALL GRANNY makes first claiming start.

SIXTH RACE

1. MONEY RIVER 2. CART'S SNAPPY 3. GOLD MIND

MONEY RIVER took action in debut and closed with a rush to win at first asking; last out broke poorly from inside post and was buried; outside draw much better for her, and she's worked well since last race. CART'S SNAPPY backed up late in recent two-turn try; cut back to sprint might boost form. GOLD MIND shows a lot of early speed but has trouble finishing; last was a step in right direction, but she lacks consistency, and there's some other speed here.

SEVENTH RACE

1. IOYA TWO 2. SUMTHINTOTALKABOUT 3. PAIGE'S BOO

IOYA TWO has been rained out of last two starts, and ends up in this five-furlong dash for lack of a better spot; unproven at this trip, but does have some early lick and loves this course; clearly the classiest of these if able to get up in time. SUMTHINTOTALKABOUT hasn't ever raced on turf, but might be the horse to beat if this race is rained onto the main track; won route stakes by more than four last out and is better sprinting. PAIGE'S BOO cleared her field and dominated a $50k turf sprint here in last out; fate may hinge on whether the equally fast Brittsker stays in field if the race remains on turf.

EIGHTH RACE

1. EL MALICIA 2. CART'S FORTY FOUR 3. COOL RAIN FALLING

Maiden claimers been looking better for most of this meet than maiden allowance horses; EL MALICIA debuted for $50k claiming and was awesome; trapped on dead rail through fast pace, he shrugged off other speed and drew away through stretch to win by seven while ridden out in a fast time; more speed here, but he was fortunate to draw outside of it. CART'S FORTY FOUR rated and rallied to win maiden last out going away; that was in early Aug., but colt shows several recent works. COOL RAIN FALLING was badly beaten in mile allowance last time; probably prefers sprints.

NINTH RACE

1. MORE IYA 2. BECKISS 3. ANOTHER ACCOUNT

MORE IYA moved way, way up when switching to turf this summer, and two back was second to a standout winner; caught yielding turf in last, which may explain failure; strong threat if back on surface she can handle. BECKISS has run much better in her two turf starts than in any of her seven dirt races; second at this level in most recent out. ANOTHER ACCOUNT has been on the fringes of contention in turf races at this class level, but this is an especially soft-looking spot.
