Arkhill gets perfect ride in derby

CALGARY, Alberta - Arkhill benefited from a perfectly judged ride from Rickey Walcott to capture Saturday's $125,000 Alberta Derby, the highlight of the Stampede Park meeting.

Walcott positioned Arkhill just off the pace in the early stages of the 1 1/16-mile Alberta Derby and moved between horses in the run down the backstretch to engage the pacesetting Little Davey.

"My horse was really keen to go on with it, and we got through without having to check," Walcott said. "It was a dream trip."

Arkhill ($18.20) was bred and raised by his owner, Ted Davis, and is trained by Craig MacPherson.

* Stephan Heiler did not describe his winning journey aboard the tiny but game Tanika ($5.10) in Saturday's $50,000 Duchess of York as a dream run. But it appeared to be as close as you could get, as Heiler was able to hold the rail the entire 1 1/16 miles and handily defeated Debie Ginsburg by 3 1/2 lengths.

* Sunday's closing-day card offered another stakes doubleheader, and the first half produced an upset, with Teagues Fight ($9.10) drawing off to a 2 1/2-length score over the closing Test Boy in the rescheduled $50,000 Herald Gold Plate. Heavily favored Footprint was last in the four-horse field. Teagues Fight tied the course record of 1:42.20 for the 1 1/16 miles.

* Owner-trainer Red McKenzie, 80, capped off his best meeting in many years by sending out Lady Lev to capture the $75,000 Penny Ridge by a neck.
