Arizona simulcast bill vetoed

Gov. Janet Neapolitano of Arizona vetoed a bill on Wednesday that would have allowed for more extensive simulcasting in the state's dog and horse tracks as well as its offtrack betting network.

In a statement, Neapolitano said she vetoed the bill because the legislation did not provide for any new revenue to the state's Department of Racing, the sport's regulatory body.

"Racing is an important industry and tradition in Arizona," wrote Neapolitano, "but wagering on horse and dog races must be well regulated. The funding for such regulation should come from the racing industry."

The legislation would have eliminated a number of restrictions, such as forbidding Thoroughbred tracks from offering simulcasts until 7:30 p.m.
