Arctic Taliyah, Bold Invader meet again in Leakos

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan - Five Saskatchewan-bred 3-year-old fillies meet in Friday's $6,500 James Leakos Sophomore at Marquis Downs. Run at a mile, the race honors the late James Leakos, who was one of the province's most influential breeders and owners in the 1980's.

Arctic Taliyah will likely be favored based on her seven-furlong allowance score on July 22, when she got up for the win in deep stretch under jockey Tim Moccasin. Although the final eighth was run in a pedestrian 14.80 seconds, Arctic Taliyah had sat just off a decent pace and had enough run left to get the job done.

Bold Invader, although still a maiden, fell just a neck short to Arctic Taliyah in the allowance prep. She was flying in deep stretch after closing from 5 1/2 lengths behind the leaders. In her previous start, the six-furlong Captain Stanley Harrison, Bold Invader finished ahead of Arctic Taliyah when they ran fifth and eighth. She should continue to improve the farther they run.

Sheen Sky won the Woodland Heritage and was last year's top juvenile filly in the province. She is winless in 2005, but her last effort was encouraging.

Sheen Sky set the pace in Arctic Taliyah's allowance score before fading in deep stretch and finishing 1 1/4 lengths behind the winner. Sheen Sky also finished fourth in the Captain Stanley Harrison as the 6-5 favorite, and may be dangerous if she gets loose on the lead under leading rider Serge Rocheleau.

Rounding out the field are maidens Danz Gracefully and Fractious Lady.
