Archarcharch pulled a 14-1 upset Monday over favored J P’s Gusto in the 46th running of the Grade 3, $250,000 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park.

Archarcharch, with Jon Court riding for his father-in-law, trainer Jinks Fires, looped the field before holding off an inside run by J P’s Gusto to prevail by about a length. Elite Alex ran on late to be third in a field of 11 3-year-olds, most of them Triple Crown nominees.

Archarcharch, an Arch colt owned by Robert Yagos, finished the one-mile distance in 1:38.23 over a fast track, returning $31 to win. In December, the colt won the Sugar Bowl Stakes as a maiden, marking his only victory from three previous starts.

The $2 exacta (6-5) paid $146.60 and the $1 trifecta (6-5-9) paid $230.20.

Earlier Monday at Oaklawn, the six-race Classix went unhit, leaving a carryover of $100,093 for the next day of racing on Thursday.
