Arapahoe pushing Monday cards

In a new policy, Arapahoe Park in Aurora, Colo., will run 10 of its 36 stakes on Mondays during its upcoming mixed meet, which which will open May 26 and run through Aug. 13. The 36-date season features 21 stakes for Thoroughbreds, led by the $40,000-added Gold Rush Futurity for 2-year-olds at six furlongs on Aug. 12.

The richest race of the meet is the $100,000 Rocky Mountain Futurity, a Grade 3 race for Quarter Horses on July 14.

All of the Monday stakes will be for Thoroughbreds, beginning with the $25,000 Ingrid Knotts for Colorado-bred fillies and mares June 4. There will be stakes doubles on two Mondays, July 23 and July 30.

In addition, Arapahoe has moved Monday's first post time to 2 p.m. Mountain from its usual 1 p.m.

"The later start time," said K. Bruce Seymore, director of racing operations at Arapahoe, "will allow our card to begin as racing on the East Coast is winding down."

Arapahoe will race on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. There will be no racing on Monday, July 2, however, with a holiday program to be conducted Wednesday, July 4.
