Arapahoe Park: Vanasee romps in Spicy Stakes

Vanasee drew out to a seven-length win over Angel of the Wind in the $43,270 Spicy Stakes at Arapahoe Park on Saturday, while her 10-year-old stablemate, Vannacide, finished fourth in what might have been the final start of her career.

"I would bet she is retired," trainer Kenneth Gleason said of Vannacide, adding that he is awaiting final word from the mare's owner, Bill Vanlandingham.

The Spicy, a race Vannacide won four times, is a 1 1/16-mile for fillies and mares bred in Colorado. Vanasee ($7.40), whose dam is a full sister to Vannacide, dueled through fractions of 24.36 for the opening quarter and 48.47 for the half-mile mark Saturday. She shook free in the stretch and went on to cover the distance on a track rated fast in 1:44.33. Mike Ziegler rode the winner for Vanlandingham and Gleason.

Vanasee has now won 4 of 11 starts and $77,827.

Vannacide is a winner of 17 of 46 starts and $295,165, with 14 of her wins coming at Arapahoe.
