OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Grabbing the lead from her inside post at the start, Opus A put daylight on the field before going a quarter-mile, and turned back favored Great Gracie Dane through the stretch to win Sunday’s $75,000 Hildy’s Grey overnight stakes by two lengths. Opus A ($5.40), the second choice among five betting interests, ran a mile and 70 yards in 1:41.78 over a fast track, and upped her record on the inner dirt to 4-1-1 from seven starts, beginning with a win in the 2009 East View Stakes as a juvenile. “She’s had her issues along the way, but she’s such a nice mare,” said winning trainer Rick Violette Jr. Opus A was the second straight winner on the card for Violette and jockey Alan Garcia, who teamed up a race earlier to win a New York-bred allowance sprint with Obviously Tuesday. Opus A’s victory completed a sweep of the weekend’s stakes races for Garcia, who also won Saturday’s Busher Stakes on Sweet Seventeen. Great Gracie Dane, favored at just under 6-5, put in a prolonged bid but could never draw abreast of the winner. She was clearly second best by 6 1/2 lengths over Risk a Chance, who was coupled in the wagering with Mineralogist, her half-sister, who finished fifth. Lady Gracenote was fourth. Cody Samora completed the order of finish.
