OZONE PARK, N.Y. - After opting to skip the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies with My Happy Face, owner Michael Dubb figured he would run his 2-year-old filly in both the Tempted and Demoiselle stakes at Aqueduct.
While My Happy Face won the Tempted here on Nov. 4, the race was much tougher than Dubb anticipated, and thus he didn't even nominate the filly to Saturday's $250,000 Demoiselle Stakes.
My Happy Face won the Grade 3 Tempted by a hard-fought neck over Cue the Moon. That performance came four weeks after My Happy Face lost a head decision to Dreaming of Julia in the Grade 1 Frizette at Belmont Park.
"She's fine, but how could I run her back in three weeks off of two gut-wrenching races?" Dubb said. "She did what she was supposed to in the Tempted just by 9 3/4 lengths less than I thought she would do it."
Trainer Rudy Rodriguez said he plans to ship My Happy Face to Palm Meadows for the winter. Dubb said he would look to start her 3-year-old campaign at Gulfstream, perhaps in either the Forward Gal on Jan. 26 or the Davona Dale on Feb. 23.
Best Bets
MOST HAPPY FELLA, reclaimed from last, drops to easier spot after setting pressured pace vs. odds-on Pinball; both wins last year came on this track. ARTIE LUVSTO PARTY has a knack for surprises, with three lifetime wins coming at 33-1, 17-1 & 11-1 (two on this track); entrymate EQUIVOCATION gets major rider switch first off a claim. PURE ATTITUDE among top 3 in wins & earnings and snug fit to date clause.
