Aqueduct cancels Sunday program; reschedules East View Stakes

Sunday’s nine-race card at Aqueduct was canceled due to the effects of Saturday’s winter storm on the inner track, according to New York Racing Association officials.

It was the first cancellation of the winter meet and third cancellation in the last three weeks. The cards of Nov. 24 and Nov. 27 were scrapped due to high winds.

Though the storm that brought a couple of inches snow and rain to the Metropolitan area throughout Saturday was done by Sunday morning, Aqueduct’s inner track was wet enough where officials were concerned whether they could have a consistent surface to conduct Sunday’s card. Training at both Aqueduct and Belmont Park was canceled Sunday morning.

NYRA had hinted at a cancellation by listing most of Sunday’s scheduled races as extra races for next Friday’s card on the overnight for Thursday, entries for which were taken Saturday. Sunday’s $100,000 East View Stakes for New York-bred juvenile fillies will be run next Saturday.

Aqueduct, as well as Belmont Park, will be open for simulcasting on Sunday.

* Parx Racing in suburban Philadelphia also called off its live racing program as the result of Saturday's winter storm.

If this specially contrived "winterized track" condition was unacceptable; NYRA should get with it and sell Aqueduct right now - instead of BS -ing everyone and withholding a decision to not run - which was made yesterday. We all know where this is headed!

Whoa!!! I am not a NYRA fan but let's look at both sides. If they run the races after a pretty large snowfall and the track is not quite right and the horses and jocks get injured in a spill, we all get on here and complain loud, clear and furiously and we would be right in so doing. Now, NYRA is being cautious after the bad press it had for the past two years re horse deaths on the inner track in winter and we all complain. I would think the horsemen and jocks had some input into the cancellation decision too,. As for me, I am still playing the horses today, but at Hollywood, Fair Grounds and Gulfstream. Making some money too. Hollywood opens its first race in an hour or so. As Harvey Pack would say, :May the horse be with you."

Every day NYRA has a race day they lose money. Only the racino money and the law stating they must run X number of days, forces them to run. Just the racino money alone saves them saves them $200,000 today. Plus they save from their negative purse/handle cash flow as well. Well done NYRA, they understand running horse races in NY is a losing proposition for the operator and fan. Only the owners and trainers make money.

It's a joke. They don't want to work. Period. Why don't they make up cancelled cards by running tomorrow or over their planned break before Christmas? And let people think we will race and buy the drf.

They don't have a Christmas break this year.

Oh that's right. Thanks Richard. Good news!

Bad forecasting, they could run today. Not that bad at all.

Isn't the whole purpose of an inner dirt track to enable tracks to run in the winter?
Richard More than 1 year ago
Bingo !

Typical mismanagement of NYRA...but they want to INCREASE prices....they knew they weren't going to run yesterday but wait until today?

Lol. And she doesn't use that finger to type. In fact.... its sponsored by DRF plus
Patricia Doyle More than 1 year ago
How about that. I have all of my fingers and still made money today. How? NYRA cancelled today's race card at Aqueduct and I got to keep my money in my pocket instead of playing NY. Just think of the money I make if they cancel all race cards. lol

Woodbine is racing but Aqueduct isn't lol!

Let me say it again.... until American braintrusts realize that the best track in North America is not in the US. Woodbine has a nicer facility than anything in NY. ( saratoga included however the mystique and history makes up for the age of saratoga). this "breeders cup has to be in perfect weather" stuff sucks. The NFL got wise and moved its marquee game from perfect weather to where racing is canceled today. The track plays fair, poly or not and the turf is FAR better than anything in America. Bring the cup back north
