Aqueduct cancels Sunday card due to high winds

Email

Sunday’s nine-race card at Aqueduct was canceled due to high winds, according to track officials. Both Aqueduct and Belmont Park were to remain open for simulcasting.

According to Glen Kozak, NYRA’s vice president/facilities and racing surfaces, the National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for sustained winds from 20 to 30 miles per hour, with gusts ranging from 45 to 55 mph, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Kozak said the cancellation did not have to do with temperatures that were in the low 20s Sunday morning.

“Temperatures aren’t the issue,” he said. “The track is fine; the turf had a little crust on it. It’s the wind that’s the issue.”

Live racing is scheduled to resume Wednesday.

Why not bring the card back tomorrow?
G More than 1 year ago
That would have been a good plan but NYRA takes soo long to make decisions, they might decide by next year they could have run tomorrow, lol.

Are you guys really that stupid? You do know you have to apply for racing dates and you can't just pick a date to reschedule it.
G More than 1 year ago
Yes, I know. I was just saying, hence the lol. Why is it, so many people that makes comments are jerks? Really, why do you have to call people stupid?

I can't believe you just made this suggestion. Clueless.

they talk all this trash about Aqueduct .. yet you have some of the highest purses best jockeys and all star trainers there every year ....yeah lol

Who cares about Aqueduct and its corrupt operations. There are other tracks one can enjoy without worrying what the NY stewards are going to do next to screw the betting publuc

So play other corrupt tracks where a horse goes off at 5-1 and going into the final turn is miraculously 6/5 winning by lengths. NYRA is poorly managed but rest assured the cheating is ramped in other places. I played the Delta Downs card Saturday and was amazed at how "good" the local trainers are. Trainers strike at 60-75% there. Pretty solid stats for pretty cheap stock. Anyway, think of something better to say next time before you resort to the same tired story.

Funny thing about the NYRA, their races go off at post time. Try that in Cal. or any where else. Another funny thing you foul you come down, not like in Cal. where the stewards magically determine if the fouled horse was cost a placing. That is bull. A foul is a foul, enforce it and all the debate stops. Ohh and what about a horse going fron 3-1 to 8-5 during the race? I'll take NY racing thank you.

Agreed. NY stewards are better than Cal stewards.

Currently winds are not high but a wind advisory was issued by the national weather service. Temps are at freezing. NYRA made a very smart decision to cancel. Best thing for the safety of horses and jockeys!

I agree. I have been betting Hollywood Park this afternoon so I am getting my "gambling fix." lol This week we probably will see more race cards cancelled up and down the east coast of the US. I think Parx even cancelled today, I assume for weather. Parx has a quarantine in effect due to EHV1 so I am sure they are running out of horses as no horses will be allowed in or out. That is one horrific disease EHV1 especially when it is the neurological strain. Horses never rebound from that neuro strain, i.e. if they make it.

Yes, Parx, Mountaineer, Zia and Aqueduct all cancelled due to weather. I played Hollywood today also and had amgood day. Its sad when animals suffer and these thoroughbreds are so fragile. I have heard how bad the EHV1 virus is. Hope they don't loose many. Good luck on your gambling!

Yes, I had a very good day at Hollywood as well. Love California weather. As for EHV1, it is imperative grooms, trainers, and even vets observe the strictest of biosecurity in and around the barn. One can carry the virus on clothes, shoes, horse equipment. Even vets tires when driving barn to barn. It is extremely contagious. I always wished that tracks would offer seminars for backstretch employees on biosecurity and outbreak control. I saw first hand when working on the Foot and Mouth outbreak 2000 UK how the virus was carried farm to farm via vets and other personnel. Many many animals euthanized during that one. In a way one can compare FMD to EHV1 in that both are extremely contagious. Hope Aqueduct and other tracks like Laurel, CT, Mountaineer etc don't get the infection.

Thanks, I only knew what little I have read in the news during outbreaks. I live in California, so I love the weather also. Been here ten years since moving from Louisiana and live near Sacramento. I still love the Louisiana tracks and played and hit the late pick 4 saturday at Delta Downs. Sunday I played some Fair Grounds and Hollywood and made a small profit. I always feel a day I break even or ahead in anyway is a great day, betting the horses, win or loose is always good! Have a great week!

Not as easy to handicap races when wind is as bad as it is. Go outside and see for yourself. The cancellation has nothing to do with track surface and even if they were on all weather the card would have been cancelled. It is much harder for the jocks to control these horses in windy conditions. There were 2 year old races planned and they are extra hard to handle in gusty wind conditions. I am glad they cancelled. If one MUST bet on horses, bet Hollywood Park or Golden Gate. There is a world out there, so enjoy.

BS weather report. Winds are 12 mph right now. NY sucks.

If NY had any sense, they would've turned (at least) the Inner Track to All Weather

wow, surprised we could read this article

Uh oh, is this a preview of what will transpire this winter in NY? Not even racing on the Inner Dirt Track yet and NYRA is cancelling cards due to weather conditions. Here's to hoping that the weather cooperates with racing in NY this winter.
sjm80s . More than 1 year ago
New York shouldn't be racing in the winter anyway. It's brutal.
