Apprentice rider bruised in spill

ALBANY, Calif. - Apprentice jockey Jose Rivera Jr. spent Thursday night in Eden Hospital in Castro Valley with a badly bruised left thigh after falling in a race earlier in the day at Golden Gate Fields.

Rivera, whose 41 victories tie him for sixth in the jockey standings with Kevin Krigger, was injured after being unseated when his mount Jewel of Asia clipped heels on the second turn in the sixth race. X-rays at Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley showed no broken bones, but Rivera was transferred to Eden Hospital and kept overnight as a precaution. He is expected to resume riding Wednesday.
