With Anticipation needs best - again

With Anticipation trains under Kate Fitzpatrick Wednesday at Saratoga. A 7-year-old, With Anticipation will try for a repeat victory in the Grade 1, $500,000 Sword Dancer Invitational.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - A case can be made that the best race With Anticipation has run in his career came in last year's Sword Dancer Invitational Handicap. The case can also be made that the 7-year-old gelding will have to duplicate that effort in order to become just the third repeat winner of Saratoga's Grade 1 turf fixture, run at 12 furlongs on the inner turf course.

With Anticipation drew post 10 and is the 120-pound highweight in the $500,000 Sword Dancer, which counts four Grade 1 winners among its 11 entrants. The Sword Dancer will be televised live on ESPN (5-6 p.m. Eastern).

A year ago, With Anticipation dueled with Slew Valley through early fractions of 23.61 seconds, 47.93, and 1:12.87, yet still had something left at the finish and won the Sword Dancer by three-quarters of a length over King Cugat.

"I thought he showed a lot of class and ability to set those kind of fractions going that distance and still kick in," trainer Jonathan Sheppard said. "So, I'd have to say it was probably one of his best races."

With Anticipation went on to win the Grade 1 Man o' War before finishing his season with disappointing efforts in the Breeders' Cup Turf and Japan Cup. After losing his first three starts this year, With Anticipation beat Denon by a neck in the Grade 1 United Nations Handicap at Monmouth Park, in which he stalked the pace.

With Anticipation will be ridden by Pat Day, who with a victory will become Thoroughbred racing's all-time leading jockey in purse money.

In the United Nations, With Anticipation held off the Bobby Frankel-trained Denon. Frankel believes Denon was inhibited by Sarafan, who brushed Denon at the top of the stretch.

"I'm not saying he would have won, but I think it would have been real close," said Frankel.

Denon is winless in two starts at 12 furlongs, but Frankel said he believes both races came with legitimate excuses.

"The first one, he was stopped really badly and almost went down," Frankel said. "The second one, [the jockey] let him drop back and there was no pace. Since then, we've been riding him out of the gate. He doesn't have a great turn of foot; he has to be pretty close to the pace."

Denon will break from the rail under Edgar Prado and 118 pounds.

Cetewayo won the 1998 Sword Dancer as a 4-year-old. Now 8, Cetewayo enters the Sword Dancer off a course-record performance in the Stars and Stripes Breeders' Cup Handicap at Arlington Park on July 6, when he rallied from 18 lengths back.

"The horse is well, and he'll run well," trainer Michael Dickinson said. "But we need a strongly run race because he's a closer. We want this California horse [Grammarian] to go with With Anticipation."

Whitmore's Conn upset the 11-furlong Bowling Green Handicap at 14-1 last month at Belmont and may offer similar value on Saturday. A son of Kris S. out of the Deputed Testamony mare Albonita, Whitmore's Conn should find the added furlong to his liking.

"I think the extra distance will help him," trainer Randy Schulhofer said. "He's bred to go a mile and a half. I love our chances. The more distance, the better his numbers, and he's just doing so well."

Shaun Bridgmohan will ride Whitmore's Conn because the connections of Volponi were a little slow to commit to the Sword Dancer

Jose Santos picks up the mount on Volponi, who will attempt 12 furlongs for the first time. Volponi is coming off a win in the one-mile Poker Handicap and a runner-up finish in the nine-furlong Bernard Baruch for trainer Phil Johnson, who won this race in 1995 with Kiri's Clown.

"I imagine the distance will not be a barrier to him; the pedigree certainly says it won't be," Johnson said. "We took him off speed training and put him into long gallops."

Completing the field are Startac, a tough-trip fourth in the Bowling Green; Man From Wicklow; Hawkeye; Eltawaasul; and Rhythm Band.
