Animal Kingdom, Toby's Corner begin training for return

Trainer Graham Motion said Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom and Wood Memorial winner Toby’s Corner were both ridden under tack at the Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland on Tuesday, the first time either has had a rider on their back since returning to training late this summer.

“We rode Animal Kingdom and Toby’s Corner for the first time in the shed today,” said Motion. “They’ll keep jogging in the shed for another two to three weeks before actually going out to the track to gallop. Prior to this, they’d both been going on the Aquatread machine for about a month.”

An Aquatread is an equine treadmill that is used in water.

Animal Kingdom has not started since finishing a troubled sixth in the Belmont Stakes. The son of Leroidesanimaux underwent surgery to repair a slab fracture in his hind leg on June 30. Toby’s Corner has been sidelined since rallying to defeat Arthur’s Tale and Uncle Mo in the Grade 1 Wood on April 9.

“My inclination at the moment is to keep them here at Fair Hill at least until the weather starts getting tricky, maybe December, before bringing them down to Palm Meadows to continue training this winter,” said Motion.
