Anderson saddling top two in Agassiz

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Stablemates Resurgent and Brinello will battle each other in Saturday's $40,000 Agassiz Stakes, the feature race here at Assiniboia Downs.

The Agassiz, a one-mile race for Manitoba-bred 3-year-olds and up, has a field of only five.

Trained by Carl Anderson, Resurgent and Brinello have faced each other five times in their careers.

Resurgent won three of their four meetings last year, including victories in restricted two stakes.

Brinello came out victorious in their only meeting this year, winning the restricted Manitoba Maturity two starts ago.

After the Maturity, Brinello won a first-level allowance in his next start, defeating Illalwaysbethere, who returned to win at the same level last Sunday.

Resurgent finished a closing second behind graded-stakes-placed Elite Mercedes in the Wheat City Stakes the last time he ran.

Resurgent and Brinello are uncoupled in the wagering.

Of the three facing the Anderson pair, Gus Again is the most likely to score an upset.

A 9-year-old gelding trained by Wayne Elias, Gus Again won the 2001 and 2004 runnings of the Agassiz.

In 2005 Gus Again finished second in the Agassiz to another Anderson runner, Albarino.

Also entered are Cryptic and Wild River Dancer, both one-time winners who defeated maiden claimers recently. Both were well beaten by Resurgent and Brinello in the restricted J.W. Sifton Stakes last year.

* The Manitoba Horse Racing Commission will hold a public hearing Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Howard Johnson Hotel at 3740 Portage Avenue, looking into the multiple disqualification that occurred in the fifth race last Saturday.
