Anderson saddles 50 percent of field


WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Carl Anderson trains two of the four horses in Saturday's Manitoba Maturity at Assiniboia Downs, and his entrants, Simply Regal and Albarino, will likely be top two betting interests.

The Manitoba Maturity, a 1 1/16-mile race for Manitoba-bred 4-year-olds, offers a purse of $40,000.

Simply Regal began this season by running third in a second-level allowance race here May 8. He won at that condition in his next start, on June 4. Most recently, Simply Regal finished a closing second behind Iwoodificould in the Free Press Stakes on June 19.

Albarino has also run three times this year, all against first-level allowance company. A son of Langfuhr, Albarino was sixth in his first start. He then finished second behind Penalty Peat, who returned to win a second-level allowance in his next start. Albarino won his first start of the year, around two turns, here June 25.

Rohan Singh has a repeat call on Albarino, who begins from the outside.

Also entered are Coal Smudge and Stonewall Harris, both of whom have been mired at their present conditions for a while.

Coal Smudge has won five restricted stakes races, including last year's Manitoba and J.W. Sifton, but finished well behind Albarino in his last two starts. Stonewall Harris has raced four times this year, all against second-level allowance company, and was well beaten by Simply Regal on two occasions.

* Nominations closed Wednesday for the R.C. Anderson Stakes, a one-mile race for Manitoba-bred 3-year-old fillies here July 16. The nominees, in alphabetical order, are Black Teddy, Cindy Embers, Danger Pay, Darnation, Freisa, Gold With Honor, Her Excellence, One More Turn, Only Misty, Princess Potoula, and Wicked Grin.
