ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Amis Gizmo ($2.90) established himself as a contender for next year’s Queen’s Plate with a determined score Saturday over the previously unbeaten Aye Aye Captain in the $125,000 Kingarvie Stakes at Woodbine. Amis Gizmo dueled with Conquest Cavalry through sizzling fractions of 23.38 seconds, 46.39, and 1:11 in the 1 1/16-mile test for Ontario-sired 2-year-olds. He opened up a clear lead on the far turn, where Aye Aye Captain commenced his rally, and dug in to prevail by 1 3/4 lengths in 1:44.46. Aye Aye Captain finished nearly four lengths ahead of a fading Conquest Cavalry. Hey Bear, Bear Skinned, Rocket Plan, Victory Canyon, and Alturist completed the order of finish. Luis Contreras rode Amis Gizmo for trainer Josie Carroll. “He had a lot of speed early and was fighting with the horse beside him,” said Contreras. “I tried to make him relax as much as possible. By the half-mile, I was by myself on the lead, and I tried to let him relax, so I had a little more kick at the end.” Owned by Ivan Dalos, Amis Gizmo is unbeaten in four starts, all restricted stakes.
