Amazing Speed refuses to lose

The $45,000 Sweetrickydancer Stakes at Calder started out as an eight-horse race on turf, but ended up a virtual match race on the main track, culminating with a game half-length victory by Amazing Speed over 9-5 favorite Prospect of Love.

The Sweetrickydancer was originally carded at 7 1/2 furlongs on the turf, but had to be switched to a mile on the main track because of overnight rains. Amazing Speed and Prospect of Love hooked up on the lead entering the clubhouse turn and dueled with one another for the remainder of the trip. Amazing Speed, racing off the rail, repulsed several bids from Prospect of Love along the inside. Amazing Speed won despite attempting to lug in near midstretch.

Funny Annie rallied mildly to finished third, 3 1/2 lengths behind Prospect of Love. She in turn was followed by Vivaldi Girl, Survicat, El Bank Robber, and the slow-starting Crykisses. Ensign Appeal was scratched.

Amazing Speed, a 3-year-old daughter of Langfuhr, covered a mile in 1:40.46 over a fast track and paid $10.80. She was ridden to victory by Carlos Olivero for trainer Jose Garoffalo.
