Amadeus Wolf wins Group 1

Amadeus Wolf gave trainer Kevin Ryan and jockey Neil Callan their first winner in a Group 1 race in Friday's Middle Park Stakes for 2-year-old colts at Newmarket.

Sent off at 4-1, Amadeus Wolf finished 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Red Clubs.

Always Hopeful set the pace in the six-runner race, depleted from its original field of nine following the scratches of Art Museum and Classic Encounter, as well as Guest Connections, who became upset in the stalls and had to be withdrawn.

Amadeus Wolf was always close up in second, and took up the lead a furlong and a half from home. Red Clubs was the only challenger in the final stages, but he could not reach the winner. Always Helpful held third. The 2-1 favorite, Ivan Denisovich, never threatened and finished fourth.

Final time for the six furlongs on good to soft ground was 1:12.36.

After the race, Ryan said that Amadeus Wolf would not race again this year and would be pointed for next year's 2000 Guineas.
