Alywyn susceptible to wide trip

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Alywyn will have to earn it if she is going to win her third in a row at Northlands Park on Wednesday. The sprint for 3-year-old fillies running for a $25,000 claiming price drew nine horses and goes as the seventh race.

Alywyn drew the outside post position and there is a good chance she will end up going a little wide around the first turn in the six-furlong feature. Trained by Jim Meyaard, Alywyn was an easy seven-length winner going 6 1/2 furlongs at this level on Aug. 26. Meyaard dropped her into a six-furlong $17,500 claiming race on Sept. 6 and not surprisingly she was sent off as the odds-on choice. With Rickey Walcott aboard, Alywyn stalked the early pace before drawing off in the stretch to win by 2 3/4 lengths over Calmcoolncollected. A similar trip could be in the cards here .

Besides dealing with a possible wide trip, Alywyn figures to have her hands full with Hardcore Candy, who is dropping into a straight claiming race for the first time in her career. Trained by Rod Cone, Hardcore Candy started off her 3-year-old season with a win in a $50,000 optional claiming race at Hastings on April 25. After finishing up the track in the $51,000 Emerald Downs at Hastings she shipped to Northlands, where in her next two starts she went unplaced in two stakes races. Finding $32,000 optional claimers more to her liking, Hardcore Candy reeled off back-to-back wins on July 12 and Aug. 23. In her latest start, she tried to run with multiple stakes winner Dandy Dora early, but couldn't keep up and faded to finish last in a 6 1/2-furlong allowance.

Calmcoolncollected, trained by Darcy Hawkes, has good speed and could be dangerous if she clears early. In her last start she opened up a one-length lead after the first quarter-mile, but by the half-mile mark she was under severe pressure from Alywyn and Fascinator. She held on well to finish a clear second and she could be ready for a big effort in the third start of her form cycle.

Lynn's Temptress, second to Alywyn on Aug. 26, could improve as a second-time Lasix user. She should also appreciate what figures to be a lively pace.

Changesinlatitude should appreciate the class relief after finishing fifth in the $71,000 Northlands Park Oaks in her last start.
