Alywow euthanized at age 11

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Alywow, the 1994 Canadian Horse of the Year and a valuable broodmare, was euthanized March 1 in Ireland at the age of 11 because of a bone infection, according to a report in the Racing Post.

A daughter of Alysheba, Alywow won the first race run over Woodbine's E.P. Taylor turf course, the 1994 Canadian Breeders' Cup Handicap. Her other stakes victories included the Grade 3 Nijana Stakes, the Canadian Maturity, and the Natalma. She won seven of 19 starts for earnings of $648,431.

Alywow's runner-up finishes in two Grade 1's - the Rothmans Ltd. International and the Flower Bowl - in 1994 were instrumental in helping her land Horse-of-the-Year honors. She was voted the Sovereign Award as champion 3-year-old filly and grass horse that year.

Alywow was sold in foal to Storm Cat by Kinghaven Farm for $1.2 million at the 1996 Keeneland November Sale. She was resold in foal to Mr. Prospector the following November for $1.25 million to Pat O'Kelly, who sent her to Europe. Alywow is the dam of 3-year-old Century City, a maiden winner last fall in England for trainer Aidan O'Brien.
