Allard-trained pair both return from layoffs

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Trainer Ned Allard has two well-rested fillies ready to roll Thursday in the $41,000 feature at Monmouth Park.

The six-furlong second-level allowance race attracted six fillies and mares. It offers optional claiming for $32,000, but none of the runners is in for the tag.

Both Arealhotlover and Shananies Song have had extended vacations.

Arealhotlover, making her debut for Allard, last ran in the Sandpiper Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs in December. The 3-year-old is 2 for 7, including a stakes win in the Cassidy in October at Calder.

Shananies Song, 4, is also a stakes winner. She has not run since the fall of her 2-year-old campaign. She went 2 for 3 in her first season, concluding with a win in the Finger Lakes Juvenile Filly Stakes.

"Nothing was serious with either one," Allard said. "They're not coming off ugly circumstances, but for some reason it has taken a long while to get them back and get them right. Both have demonstrated they have some ability in the past. They are both training very nicely. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they come back and they're as useful as they were."

Shananies Song had the more persistent issues. The layoff was a combination of badly bucked shins and some ankle problems.

"It just took a long while," Allard said.

The two fillies will run as separate betting interests and Allard said both will run

"The two-other-than hasn't been easy to fill here at Philadelphia Park," he said. "They are both in need of a race."

Abel Mariano, the apprentice who leads the Philadelphia Park standings, rides Arealhotlover.

Trainers Bruce Levine and Gary Contessa both have runners in the race that they claimed from each other.

S.S. Belle has the rail for Levine, Monmouth's leading trainer. S.S. Belle has been a very successful claim, picked up for $10,000 in late October at Aqueduct. She has 2 wins and 2 thirds in 5 starts since.

Contessa took Boss Tiffany from Levine for $25,000 in March at Aqueduct. She is 1-1-2 in 4 starts since then, racing primarily in starter allowances.

Completing the field are Elocution and Swallow Falls.
