Del Mar Debutante analysis by Micheal Hammersly

Awesome Baby (#1, 5-2)

This isn’t exactly going out on a limb as she may well go favored off that smashing debut but that’s also the attraction: her smashing debut. She set a brisk pace, under pressure, then kicked clear to win easily. She’s worked brilliantly since (bullet 6fs in 1:11 here Aug. 25) and her speed can help her flee the rail draw. With that pedigree she almost certainly isn’t a need-the-lead type, which figures a good thing as SHE’S A TIGER already has a ton of speed and today gets blinkers so she may be even more eager early. Key ‘BABY on top of ‘TIGER as well as the unbeaten CONCAVE.

Del Mar Debutante analysis by Marty McGee

She’s a Tiger (#6, 4-1)

Of course Baffert has had a stranglehold on this race for years, but a few of his colleagues will try to get him to skip a year as he runs three at ‘em today. Perhaps Bonde holds the strongest hand with this ultra-fleet filly, who adds blinkers after narrowly failing to hold sway versus the O’Neill filly Concave in the G2 Sorrento last out; draw as one of the outside speeds and the presence of HOF jock aid the cause. The play: Win, #6; exacta/trifecta keys, 6 up-and-back with all 3 Bafferts, those being #1, #2, #8. – Marty McGee
