Alfurune in right spot

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Alfurune, a shipper from Emerald Downs, has found an inviting spot to gain his second victory in Thursday's feature race at Bay Meadows, a $32,000 starter allowance at one mile.

Alfurune has been competing in stakes in Washington and should find this a much easier field. Thursday's feature, for nonwinners of two races, is the seventh race and offers a $22,000 purse.

Alfurune, trained by Larry Ross, won his maiden against $16,000 maiden claimers in his debut May 31 at Emerald. He finished third in his second start, against $32,000 claiming company.

Alfurune then finished second and third in allowance races, and followed with a second, beaten a length, in a $25,000 overnight handicap at Emerald. Last out he wound up seventh in the Emerald Down Breeders' Cup Derby.

Givemethreedimes has been competing against much tougher at Del Mar and should also appreciate the drop in class Thursday. Last out, against $62,500 claimers, he sprinted to a clear lead but had nothing left for the stretch run and wound up eighth. Givemethreedimes won his maiden at Bay Meadows in May.

Fly to the Lake is another Del Mar invader who should draw support in this spot. Last out, Fly to the Lake closed for third in a 1 1/16-mile race for $32,000 claimers at Del Mar, and was claimed by trainer Doug O'Neill. Fly to the Lake won his maiden last year at Del Mar.

Acts Like a Winner finished sixth last out in a similar race at six furlongs. In his previous start, he sprinted to a seven-length lead but tired to finish third, beaten a length. Acts Like a Winner has a sharp recent work.
