Alberta names 2012 champions

Ryan Hayes
Canadian Derby winner Toccetive was named Alberta's Horse of the Year for 2012.

Horse Racing Alberta, the governing body for racing in the Canadian province, named its champions for the 2012 racing year, led by a pair of standout geldings.

Toccetive was named Alberta’s 2012 Horse of the Year, having won the province’s marquee race, the Grade 3 Canadian Derby at Northlands Park. The now 4-year-old Toccet gelding, out of the Two Punch mare Punching, also secured the province’s champion sophomore honors.

Owned by Southview Ag 1998 Ltd. and trained by Joan Petrowski in 2012, Toccetive won three of nine starts during his 3-year-old campaign, only missing the board once, for earnings of $220,865. In addition to his Canadian Derby victory, the gelding also won the Speed to Spare Stakes at Northlands and finished second in the Ky Alta Handicap and Count Lathum Handicap. He was bred in Kentucky by Lyle and Phylis Farkash. Toccetive’s 2012 campaign was strong enough to earn him a spot as a finalist for the Sovereign Award as Canada’s champion 3-year-old male.

While Alberta’s year-end awards were not restricted to Alberta-breds, the province was well-represented by champions, led by Hollywood Drama.

The now 3-year-old Ministers Wild Cat gelding, out of the Seattle Slew mare Modern Drama, won three of four starts last year to wrap up Alberta-bred of the year honors, as well as the province’s champion 2-year-old title. After finishing out of the money in his debut effort, Hollywood Drama reeled off three stakes wins in the Two Year Old Sales Stakes, Birdcatcher Stakes, and Alberta Premier’s Futurity, all at Northlands. He earned $91,661 during his juvenile campaign.

Bred in Alberta by Ken Anderson, Hollywood Drama is owned by the partnership of M and P Equipment, Inc., Met Set Consulting Ltd., and Dale Saunders, who also trains the gelding.
