Air Forbes Won dead at 30

Email

Air Forbes Won, who went into the 1982 Kentucky Derby undefeated and as the favorite, was euthanized on Nov. 19 at Wintergreen Farm near Midway, Ky., because of infirmities associated with old age. Air Forbes Won was 30.

Though sent off at 5-2 off the strength of four straight victories to start off his career, Air Forbes Won tired in the stretch and finished ninth. Trained by Frank LaBocetta, Air Forbes won did not participate in any of the other Triple Crown races, finished second later in the year in both the Ohio and Pennsylvania Derbies, and then was retired with a tendon injury.

By Bold Forbes - who won the Derby in 1976 - and out of the Tobin Bronze mare Bronze Point, Air Forbes Won was sent to stud to Wintergreen and had a somewhat successful career as a stallion, siring 49 stakes winners, including Yanks Music, the champion 3-year-old filly of 1996, and Mercedes Won, Canada's champion 2-year-old male of 1988.
