Against the Tide back on his best game

Email

Against the Tide shoots for his third win in a row in the feature race at Northlands Park Sunday. The one-mile classified allowance race for 3-year-olds goes as the seventh race. There is a $32,000 claiming option available but none of the six horses entered is in for a price.

Against the Tide gained a lot of confidence when he dropped into and easily won a $15,000 claiming race for nonwinners of two going 6 1/2 furlongs on Aug. 16. Acting on behalf of K6 Ranches Limited, trainer Ernie Keller claimed Against the Tide out of the race. In his first start for his new connections, Against the Tide won a one-mile $25,000 claiming race on Sept. 18. It was Against the Tide's first try going around three turns and there is an excellent chance he will take a big step forward in his second route.

Shannon Beauregard retains the mount.

Bronze Barbarian, trained by Carla Chrisoffersen, could end up being the favorite. A son of Rebmec, Bronze Barbarian is coming off of a second-place finish behind Mr. Shadar in the restricted Beaufort Stakes Sept. 19. In his previous start he finished a respectable fifth in the Grade 3, $300,000 Canadian Derby. Bronze Barbarian went into the derby off of a sharp 5 3/4-length win in a one-mile first-level allowance race.

A beaten favorite is always an interesting betting angle, and Double Shuffle fits the bill. Trained by Robertino Diodoro, Double Shuffle finished second as the 3-2 favorite over Against the Tide in his latest start. In his previous race he finished third by a head behind Tease the Tiger in the Saskatchewan Derby on Sept. 5.
