African Rose secures seventh stakes win in Bold Ego

African Rose surpassed $500,000 in career earnings Saturday at Sunland Park, where she closed for a 2 1/2-length win over Chanteline in the $65,000 Bold Ego Handicap for fillies and mares. It was another 1 1/4 lengths back in third to Cassy Sue.

African Rose ($14.80) settled off the pace in sixth as Small Moves and Cassy Sue dueled through an opening quarter in 21.72 seconds. African Rose began picking off rivals from there and went on cover 5 1/2 furlongs on a track rated fast in 1:03.32.

Enrique Gomez was aboard for Judge Lanier Racing and trainer Miguel Hernandez.

African Rose earned $39,000 for the win, to lift her career earnings to $521,866. She has now won 17 of 40 starts, with seven of her wins coming in stakes company. She is 7-year-old mare by Bwana Charlie and was bred in Florida by Heiligbrodt Racing Stable.
