Adena gets Congaree

Congaree, a Grade 1 winner who has earned more than $3 million, will stand at Frank Stronach's Adena Springs Farm in Versailles, Ky.

Janice and Robert McNair, whose Stonerside Stable owns Congaree, announced the stud deal on Thursday. Congaree will begin his stud career in 2005 with a $15,000 fee.

Congaree, 6, is by 1991 champion 2-year-old and Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Arazi. He is out of the Grade 1-placed Mari's Book mare Mari's Sheba.

Trained by Bob Baffert, Congaree won 10 graded stakes, including five Grade 1 events: the 2001 Swaps Stakes, the 2002 and 2003 Cigar Miles, and the 2003 Hollywood Gold Cup and Carter Handicap. He also finished third in the 2001 Kentucky Derby and Preakness.

Congaree retired this year with a record of 25-12-2-4 and earnings of $3,267,490.

Robert McNair said that both Adena Springs and Stonerside plan to support Congaree as a stallion heavily. "Adena will be breeding 20 of their top mares each year, as will Stonerside," McNair said.
