Adena again tops breeders

Frank Stronach's Adena Springs led all breeders by earnings in 2009, the seventh consecutive year it has achieved that distinction.

Adena-bred runners won 568 races from 3,903 starts and earned $12,853,329, according to data released Wednesday by the Jockey Club Information Systems. Adena Springs also headed the breeders' rankings on a list that included breeding partnerships, with the winners of 568 races from 3,908 starts for earnings of $12,856,254.

Rounding out the top 10 breeders not including partnerships were Eugene Melnyk with $7,513,369; Juddmonte Farms, $7,055,634; Brereton C. Jones, $6,184,957; Edward P. Evans, $4,356,533; Pam and Marty Wygod, $4,328,166; Stonerside Stable, $4,064,060; Gulf Coast Farms, $3,683,500; Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey, $3,459,377; and Maverick Productions, $3,368,507.

Melnyk also was the second-leading breeder by earnings on the rankings including partnerships, with $7,513,696. Filling out the rest of the top 10 breeders including partnerships were Juddmonte Farms, which had no horses bred in partnership, with $7,055,634; Brereton C. Jones, $7,025,758; William S. Farish, $5,198,485; WinStar Farm, $4,888,763; Stonerside Stable, $4,825,395; Marty Wygod, $4,603,613; Edward P. Evans, no horses bred in partnership, $4,356,533; and Pam Wygod, $4,328,166.
