Ace Blue captures Mervyn LeRoy

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Before Ace Blue arrived in the United States from Brazil last year, trainer Paulo Lobo reviewed videos of his previous races to better understand the horse's abilities.

"I knew he was a fighter," Lobo said. The scouting report proved to be prophetic.

Recording the most important win of his career, Ace Blue ($9.80) passed a stubborn Ender's Shadow in the final sixteenth and held off a late threat from Borrego to win the $150,000 .

Ace Blue finished 1 1-16 miles on the main track in 1:41.45.

Ace Blue needed the final three furlongs to get past a pesky Ender's Shadow. Ace Blue won by a head. Borrego, the 8-5 favorite, rallied from fourth to miss winning by a head and a neck.

Ender's Shadow led through early fractions of 23.95 and 47.33 seconds, but was closely tracked by Ace Blue. Jockey David Flores moved Ace Blue alongside Ender's Shadow at the end of the backstretch, but never drew clear.

Owned by Eternamente Rio Stud, Ace Blue has won 7 of 14 starts and $162,384. The Mervyn LeRoy marked his U.S. stakes debut after winning two of four starts in allowance races in the last six months.
