Absolutely True breaks five-furlong track record

Email

Absolutely True ($12.80) put in a dazzling stretch run to capture Sunland Park's $50,000 Budweiser Handicap. His time of 55.87 seconds for five furlongs shaved .03 of a second off the track record set by Jimmy Jones in 2004.

Absolutely True, an 8-year-old Kentucky-bred owned by Wafer Thoroughbred Ranch Inc. and trained by Jon Arnett, sat back early in the five-furlong race under Travis Wales, steadily advanced, pitched wide for the stretch run, and blasted home to win by 1 1/2 lengths. Garbu's Tab, the pacesetter, stayed on gamely to be second, a neck in front of Frankenbean, who rallied from midpack in the field of 10. Yonegwa, the 5-2 favorite, chaed the pace but tired a bit in the lane to be fourth.

The winner's share of $30,000 pushed Absolutely True's career bankroll to $355,255 from 14 wins in 43 starts.
