AB What a Runner: Los Al-bound

AB What a Runner, the undefeated winner of the All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs on Monday, will reappear in the trials for the Los Alamitos Million in Southern California later this year.

Trainer Bret Vickery said AB What a Runner is scheduled to arrive at Los Alamitos this weekend, but will not start again until the Los Alamitos Million trials on Nov. 29.

The final for the $1.3 million-estimated Los Alamitos Million over 400 yards is Dec. 13.

"That's our next goal, and that's kind of been the plan from the start," Vickery said. "I'm real pleased with the filly."

AB What a Runner became the 13th filly to win the $2.05 million All American, the richest race for Quarter Horses. She won by a nose over Eye Opening Episode, who was a nose in front of Meteoric.

"I'm very glad it wasn't 445 yards," Vickery said. "She's bounced back really good. She tried her guts out."

In the Aug. 15 time trials for the All American Futurity, AB What a Runner set a 440-yard track record of 20.993 seconds.

AB What a Runner is unbeaten in three starts, having won a maiden race at tiny Les Bois Park in Boise, Idaho, in May. She was the first All American winner for owners Dennis and Kris Hill of Blackfoot; Idaho, Vickery, 39; and jockey Jay Conklin, 27.

"I've seen things and been places I didn't know existed," Vickery said. "At first, you don't realize what you've accomplished. It's kind of coming together."
