DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Eighty-four Thoroughbreds made the list of final declarations released Monday for Saturday's six stakes on the Dubai World Cup program here, but two names on the list stand out. While current and future standouts populate the six World Cup races, the night's most anticipated matchup comes in the $6 million World Cup itself, where Discreet Cat, who never has lost a race in six starts, takes on Invasor, who has lost only one of 11. The World Cup, contested at about 1 1/4 miles on the Nad Al Sheba dirt track, drew the shortest of the fields, with just eight horses entered. It was also the only one of the races for which post positions weren't assigned Monday. The World Cup post-position draw takes place Wednesday night, though the relatively small number of horses and Nad Al Sheba's forever-and-a-furlong stretch run mitigate its importance. The World Cup bills itself as an international event - and it's hard to argue with that. Among continents, only Antarctica will be without a representative Saturday. There is a strong Japanese presence here this year, including an excellent horse named Vermilion in the World Cup, and India's first runner in Dubai, Mystical, goes in the $5 million Sheema Classic, an incredibly deep 12-furlong turf race. Joining Discreet Cat, Invasor, and Vermilion in the World Cup are Bullish Luck, an 8-year-old American-bred veteran based in Hong Kong; Forty Licks, an Argentine-bred in from Saudi Arabia; Kandidate, an English horse; Storm Mayor, who has traveled from Argentina; and Premium Tap, who was an American before being sold to interests in Saudi Arabia, where Premium Tap won a major stakes last month. The $5 million Duty Free, contested at just less than nine furlongs on turf, drew a full field of 16, while the Sheema Classic got 15 final declarations. There are 16 entered in the $2 million Golden Shaheen, run over a six-furlong straight course on dirt; 13 in the United Arab Emirates Derby for Northern and Southern Hemisphere 3-year-olds; and 16 more in the $1 million Godolphin Mile, another dirt race. Fourteen horses have shipped in from the United States, including five for the Golden Shaheen, three for the Duty Free and Sheema Classic, and two for the Godolphin Mile. Three other horses currently based in the Middle East - Discreet Cat, Premium Tap, and Thor's Echo - campaigned in the U.S. last fall. U.S. horses typically dominate the Golden Shaheen, and will have strong chances in several other races this year. Besides Invasor in the World Cup, Lava Man and English Channel are among the top entries in the Duty Free, while Honey Ryder and Obrigado face a slightly greater challenge in the Sheema Classic, a race that also includes Red Rocks, last year's Breeders' Cup Turf winner. NAD AL SHEBA Saturday, March 31 No. (saddle cloth number) corresponds to post position draw except for Dubai World Cup, which will be drawn on Wednesday. GODOLPHIN MILE-G2. 1 mile (dirt). 4yo+.
